1991; A period which saw the decline of major bands and music labels and saw the rise of the then controversial mugithi genre.

It all started at Jacaranda Hotel in Nairobi city where Sam Muthee used to perform with his one guitar for the salaried folks frequenting the joint, his performances evolved and the word went around of the cool RnB and country music caressing the city at night played by a one man guitar performer and more revellers would flock the place to get this rare entertainment.

After a while the hotel manager requested Muthee to try Kikuyu music since most revellers were Andu A Nyumba and Muthee would rehearse Gaceru Wa Maitu’s song ‘Mwendwa Wakwa Mariru’ which was warmly received when played on the live one guitar performance.

The introduction of Kikuyu music to one man guitar performance was loved and loathed in equal measures but that was just a seed planted that have grown to the whole Mugithi Showbiz we have today.

Jacaranda hotel main competitors started copying their style of one man guitar performances and would introduce this new phenomena which was already the darling of revellers, Joe Mwenda who had returned from abroad was mentored into the game by Muthee and was hired by a club along Ngong road, likewise Kafell Maina signed up with a club in the CBD Nairobi and that marked the beginning of the Mugithi Phenomena,

Mike Murimi, Salim Junior, Mike Rua, Florence Wangari and Margaret Waitherero would soon join the trade as from mid 90s
