Her euphonious voice is largely her intrinsic trademark which made her one of the most sought after female vocalist when she made her debut in the benga industry; as if God sent, Waitherero inducted herself into music just when Elizabeth Nyambere was making her exit to venture into the gospel Industry.
Born as Margaret Waitherero in 1964 in Nairobi’s eastlands, she would relocate to back to her maternal roots in Kangema, Murang’a in a village just a ridge away from where Joseph Kamaru hailed from.
As a young girl, Waitherero finished her elementary education at Gacharaigu Primary School and joined Kiangunyi girls Secondary School where she dropped out half way the journey;
All along as a young girl, Waitherero was already enchanted by music and would train herself in songwriting besides engaging in schools’ music festivals, her love for music had come a long way trickling down from her Nyakinyua folk singing paternal granny and was also inspired by high sailing stars, D.K, Wahome, CDM and Kamaru.
As soon as Margaret wrapped up her formal education, she relocated back to the capital sometime around 1981 and lived with her mother;
It was at this period that Margaret’s talent kept pushing her to the wall, her calling was in music and her heart wouldn’t settle until she came out of her comfort zone and started seeking for mentorship to plunge her self into music, at that age, you wouldn’t consider any other talent hub other than Kamaru Super Sounds.
Waitherero would make a journey to downtown Nairobi at Kamaru’s music shop located along River Road street; she was to nervous to enter the shop but she went back home with Kamaru’s telephone number which was written on a sign board.
As soon as she was back at her hood, Margaret gathered her courage and made a phone call that marked a turning point in her music career; the phone call was answered by Kamaru himself who considered her request and gave her an appointment in the next few days.
On the big day, Waitherero was at Kamaru’s shop; to her dismay, her village folk and friend, Kahiga, Kamaru’s brother was at the reception which even made things easier on that fateful day.
Kahiga would inform Waitherero that they were in a dire need for a female vocalist and as destined, the studio gave her a shot to showcase her talent and with much ease Waitherero impressed on her first trials and was handed her first role;
At that time, Wahome Wa Maingi’s album “Ndi Mwihitukiri” which was supposed to have a male female duet on the flip titled “Jimmi” was lagging because they needed female vocals which were hard to come by and as said, Waitherero came as God sent and was handed the big role which she delivered perfectly and the record was released in 1982 and enjoyed massive success, from then, Waitherero made her maiden voyage in benga industry in style and success
