For Effective administration of the troublesome colonial district of Murang’a formerly known as Fort Hall, the British subdivided the district into 15 administrative locations each headed by a senior chief appointed by the governor of the colony. Later in late 80’s in the independent Kenya, an additional five locations; Kariara, Kamahoha, Kigumo,Kiriti and Kambirwa were annexed from the original 15 locations to create new admistrative unit; below is a list of all Locations in Murang’a County

Location 2- Kinyona

Location 3- Ruchu

Location 4- Muruka

Location 5- Gaicanjiru

Location 6- Muthithi

Location 7- Nginda

Location 8- Mugoiri

Location 9- Kanyenya-ini

Location 10- Weithaga

Location 11-Mbiri

Location 12- Iyego

Location 13- Gitugi

Location 14- Kiru

Location 15- Gaturi

Location 16- Kariara

Location 17- Kamahoha

Location 18- Kigumo

Location 19- Kiriti

Location 20- Kambirwa

Today, the locations have been elevated to other units some made to sub counties and others are now districts, their influence are still seen today with title deeds of land within Murang’a county numbered chronologically starting with the location number.
